Why Is Oak Flooring So Expensive And Hard To Find?

Submitted by: Michael Langer

It can be a tough task to find the right oak flooring contractor for your home. This can be due to several different variables. Most cities are home to several different flooring companies, but many of these companies do not sell or install oak flooring. The reason for this is still unclear. With such a wide market of people looking to install oak flooring in their home, you would expect that there would be heavy competition. Unfortunately this is not the case in most cities. It can be hard to find a oak flooring company with the right contractor to meet your needs.

This article is different from most of the other articles you’ll read online about finding the right flooring contractors, and meeting with a ton of representatives from each company to find the right one and yadda yadda. For oak flooring, there is a different way you must go about it due to the scarcity of actual contracting companies that sell oak flooring. Now, you must read this first, because you may mess up your only opportunity with this one. Oak flooring is desired by many. With so few companies selling oak, they can almost charge you any price they want. It’s basically a monopoly. They figure that if you want the oak flooring so bad, you’ll pay any price. Sadly for these companies, this isn’t how it works out. They see the high prices of oak, and decide to substitute for another flooring material. This is a lose-lose situation for both the homeowner and the flooring companies.

Now let me tell you how you can get around this. You’re reading this article because you want oak wood flooring in your home. SO approach it cautiously. You may be able to find 3 or 4 different contractors in your city that actually sell oak flooring products. Here’s where the “yadda yadda” comes in. Set up appointments with any of these contractors. Know a price that you are willing to spend. This requires you to do your research and find out what a decent price is for your wood oak flooring.

After your research, have the companies come in. Wait until one of the representatives is trying to hard sell you on the product. This may take a couple different visits, but I can almost guarantee that 50% of the companies will be trying to hard sell you. They will just push and push and push until you sign that contract. Let this representative sell you his hardest.

Take your time, and when you feel that his/her last push is near, say you will sign the contract for the oak flooring, no matter what the price.

“No matter what the price?” you may be asking. Yes, no matter what the price. Do not worry about it, all states have customer protection laws that enable you to cancel your contract up to 72 hours after you have signed it.

Now, wait til the next day, and call that company back. They should have left you with a business card or anything of which you can use to get in contact with them. This is where your research comes in handy. When you finally get a hold of someone, make sure you are directed to someone of authority. This part doesn’t do much good if you are speaking with the secretary at the oak flooring company. Once you are talkingto someone of authority, explain to him/her that you had signed a contract for a job yesterday, but have just found a company that is willing to do your oak flooring project at the price of “___” (this is where you use your decent price you researched online).

Most companies have already counted their previous days sales on their records, and are banking on receiving that money. Each company hates cancellations. After you tell them this, explain to them that you “will stay with your company if you can match or beat this price”.

They do not want their hardwork of their sales team, and processing team to go to waste, so 95% of the time they will drop their price to stay competitive and keep your business. This is one of the easy ways to get what you want in life.

Keep in mind that this will only work with specialty order products like oak flooring. Do not attempt this on roofing or anything as common as you will most likely just be wasting your time.
