There may be some options we have for people that use Nicorette and are applying for life insurance. Smoking can significantly affect the rates for a person who is shopping for life coverage. Let’s look at what we can do to avoid this situation if all they do is use Nicorette.
So what’s the issue with Nicorette…why would any life insurance carrier have an issue with it? The problem is that it’s hard for a carrier to distinguish between a person who smokes and one who uses Nicorette. During the paramedical exam, an applicant provides medical information (including smoking) and also draws a blood panel to test items such as cholesterol, triglycerides, and potentially signatures of tobacco use. The problem is that this blood test will show positive for either smoking or Nicorette.
Let’s first address the key issue. Smoking is a serious issue when considering the world of life insurance eligibility. It’s all over the top 10 list of causes of death as a contributor to cardio vascular disease, various deadly cancers, and generalize poor health. It’s not a list you want to be on. Since life insurance rates flow essentially from mortality tables, the life insurance underwriter is going to scrutinize use of any tobacco product. It’s a big deal over there. The underwriter’s love the paramedical exam because it can account for issues that an applicant either doesn’t know about or might conceal. The blood panel test doesn’t lie. Signatures of tobacco use are no exception but it mainly revolves around the presence of nicotine (or chemical travel-mates) in the blood. Nicorette will leave a similarly signature for this very reason which means that the underwriter will determine tobacco use is being signaled as a result. You can state that you do not smoke (again, always be honest) but the underwriter will err conservatively and assume your health class based on the blood panel test. What can we do?
This is a great example of where a knowledgeable and experience life insurance broker can significantly put the odds in your favor. Think about any profession…your own perhaps. There’s a certain amount of value that comes from experience and practice. We have seen this situation before where a person uses Nicorette but has ceased use of tobacco products for a given period of time. We can use this information and our knowledge of the different life insurance companies to find the best possible outcome. All carriers and life insurance plans for that matter have little tweaks and quirks. Most plans will automatically increase your term life rate up to a tobacco user’s rate based on Nicorette use. Notice that we said “most”. We actually have a quality (one of the big ones) life insurance company that will underwrite a person on Nicorette as if not a tobacco user. We just saved such a person a great deal of money. That’s our job, after all.
We provide the tools online to find the best life insurance rate but there are still many options on the market. The case with Nicorette and qualifying for life insurance is a perfect example of how you can take advantage of our experience. If you have a specialized health issue or situation, please contact us directly or complete or custom quote request form. Let us do the leg work for you while using our knowledge of the life insurance market for your interests.
