Medical Services Can Be Expensive

Submitted by: Veronique Jackdaw

We are very lucky to have easy accessibility to proper medical services in our country. There are hospitals in the majority of towns and some bigger urban centers can easily have more than 5 hospitals in a reasonably small radius. Some hospitals are dedicated to certain areas. For instance a cardiovascular hospital will only look after people with heart issues where an eye hospital will focus on eye exams, eye treatments and eye operations.

In more remote areas things are obviously a bit different and lots of people have to travel far to get to a hospital or a consulting room where healthcare services are obtainable. Sometimes their time runs out before they get the desired help, which is a thing that should be a serious concern for the ruling bodies of the country.

Be it as it might, medical solutions generally don’t come cheap. The worst is if you have to be admitted to hospital for long periods of time. First you have to pay for the bed you sleep in and the food you eat, then you have to pay for the staff (nurses etc) who looks after you, then the surgeons and other medical team and lastly, your medication and possible rehabilitation following your stay. On top of that you might not be able to work for quite a while, which also puts more stress on an already pricey experience!

Therefore it’s very important to be a member of a medical aid company. Although many individuals frown at the thought of having to make quite a considerable payment each month, it is really not advisable to be without it! What will happen if you all of the sudden need to undergo expensive therapy? What if you are involved in a serious car accident of some kind and need to undergo surgical treatment? Where will you suddenly find a lump sum of cash to take care of all the bills for the medical providers and procedures?I am not saying that you have to spend on the costliest medical aid plan that a medical scheme has available. Naturally, the more costly plans will offer more all-inclusive cover, but having a basic medical aid plan is undoubtedly better than not having medical aid whatsoever.

Some medical aids will allocated a specific amount for various items each year. This is usually known as your savings and every time you pay a visit to a physician or get medicine from a local drugstore, this is settled from your medical aid. Other medical aids will also allow a certain amount for eye treatments and possibly also for dentistry procedures.

Discuss a number of medical aid providers with family and friends. Various medical aids offer different plans with different types of coverage (at different rates of course) and with a bit of studying you will be sure to find a medical aid plan best suitable for your needs and requirements.

You only live once! It is important to have some sort of protection. in case life throws you a curveball!
